2014 Greater Omaha Leadership Prayer Breakfast

February 16th, 2014 No comments

Omaha Prayer BreakfastOne of my favorite Omaha events is the annual prayer breakfast held each Spring.  Hosted by the CBMC organization, the 49th annual breakfast will be held April 18, 2014 at 6:30 a.m. at the La Vista Convention Center, 12520 Westport Parkway, in La Vista.

Open to the public, and typically attended by over 600 people, this sit-down plated breakfast shows the ability of our business and community leaders to come together in unity and strength.  Prayers are offered for the community’s businesses, churches, and missions. Prayers are also lifted for our Omaha youth, the elderly, those serving in our government and military, and so on.

In the past year, Omaha has experienced several high profile homicides – violence is all around us. Now, more than ever, we need to be a city on our knees.

This year, the event’s host speaker will be Mark Whitacre, COO of Cypress Systems Inc.  Mark came to public attention in 1995 when, as president of Bio Products Division of Archer Daniels Midland (ADM), he was the highest-level corporate executive in U.S. history to become a FBI whistleblower. His undercover work for the FBI became the inspiration for the major motion picture, “The Informant” starring Matt Damon, as Mark Whitacre.

Advance registration for the breakfast is required. Individual tickets are available from $49 to $89. Table reservations and corporate sponsorships are also available. You may visit the Omaha prayer breakfast website for more details, or register at the CBMC event website.

I strongly encourage your attendance at this life changing event. I promise it will be a great start to Easter weekend.  Happy Motoring!!

11 Worth Cafe

February 2nd, 2013 No comments

11Worth CafeLocated at 2419 Leavenworth Street is Tony Caniglia’s 11 Worth Cafe. Now managed by Tony, Jr., the 11 Worth Cafe continues the tradition of Omaha restaurant excellence that is associated with the Caniglia name. The 11 Worth Cafe has been in this location since 1976. The reason… repeat business.  Whenever you eat at the cafe, you will witness the down-home, friendly interactions between the management, wait staff, and patrons. But the restaurant delivers more than friendly service.  The meal portions are plentiful, delivered hot and delicious.  On my most recent breakfast visit, I had the number 11 menu item (just had to do that); hash-browns, scrambled eggs and toast and coffee. The waitress made sure that I had jelly, hot sauce and coffee refill offers at every sip. Without a doubt, this is one of the best managed restaurants I’ve visited in a while. The servers know their craft well and seem to enjoy their work.  If you are looking for a great breakfast gathering place in Omaha, I highly recommend the 11 Worth Cafe. Open 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily. Happy Motoring!

Jimmy’s Egg

Jimmys Egg_001Jimmy’s Egg is a restaurant franchise that started in Oklahoma in 1980.  Known for its excellent breakfast menu, Jimmy’s now has 35 locations throughout the Midwest, including four stores right here in Omaha.

The Omaha locations are: 1) 17003 Evans Plaza; 2) 205 N. 80th St., Suite 119; 3) 2904 S 132nd Street; and, 4) 5106 S. 108th Street.  Jimmy’s has traditional breakfast fare on their menu, but changes things up – serving breakfast sandwiches, breakfast tacos and burritos, and their specialty item… Jimmy’s Garbage Breakfast, a compilation of all your breakfast favorites tossed together into a huge meal. The dining areas are well lit with plenty of seating. The decor is understated, with emphasis on function. My wife and I like the waffles and pancakes at Jimmy’s. Give one of the Omaha locations a try! Happy Motoring!

Amato’s Cafe & Catering

March 27th, 2011 No comments

Located at 6405 Center Street is Amato’s Cafe and Catering. Owned and operated by 70 years young, Sammy Amato, Amato’s may be THE best place in the midwest to dine for breakfast. Featured on the Food Network’s Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives show, Amato’s continues to get accolades from the television shows host, Guy Fieri, as one of his personal favorites. Here is a link to a short clip from the show.  The business at Amato’s is always bustling, and it no wonder.  Sammy makes his sausage fresh daily and it is delicious. But it is more than the menu that makes Amato’s a fun dining experience.  It is the friendly and gregarious owner and his wait staff.  You are made to feel like family. Stop at Amato’s when you are in the midtown area. Tell Sammy that Omaha Driver sent you. Happy Motoring!

Delice European Bakery & Cafe

Located at 32nd and Farnam Street in Omaha, at Midtown Crossing, is Delice European Bakery and Cafe.  Delice serves an assortment of pastries, as well as brunch, lunch and dinner menu items. The cafe is a casual and fun place to relax with friends, and possesses extensive outdoor seating.  Read the newspaper and sample their large assortment of flavored coffees. Or, enjoy a cookie, croissant, or torte cake.  The mocha torte and the opera desserts are very good; but, the almond croissant really releases the food enjoyment endorphins IMO. The coffee is also noteworthy – always fresh-brewed to my liking.  We sampled the quiche selection for breakfast one morning and found them to be excellent.  Give Delice a try and enjoy a stroll through the midtown redevelopment.  You will be very impressed by the entertainment options available in the rapidly growing community. Happy Motoring!

Big Mama’s Kitchen & Catering

August 28th, 2010 No comments

Located at 3223 N. 45th Street, on the Turning Point campus at Building A, is Big Mama’s Kitchen & Catering. Owned and operated by Patricia “Big Mama” Barron, the restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner for dining-in or carry-out. Featured on the Food Network’s “Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives” show with Guy Fieri, Big Mama’s has a strong reputation and a strong menu to back it up. My buddy Chuol Tuach and I had breakfast at Big Mama’s. I had the “Big Mama’s Omelet” and he had the “Lake Street Special.”  Chuol loved the french toast, and my bacon omelet with fresh tomatoes, green peppers and American cheese was oh-so-tasty. After breakfast we wandered through the spacious dining area and admired the many family pictures and patron photos on the restaurant walls. Big Mama Patricia has been active helping others in the Omaha community; receiving many recognitions for her charity work.  I love this quote from her business website, “Peace begins when the hungry are fed.” Indeed. The next time we visit, we’re going to have some Big Mama’s original Sweet Potato Pie Ice Cream. I’m guessing that’s a flavor we’ll not experience anywhere else. Give Big Mama’s a try. They’re open daily (closed Mondays) and their hours are listed on their website. Happy Motoring!

The Radial Cafe

Located at 817 N. 40th Street, just north of St. Cecilia’s Cathedral, is Lisa’s Radial Cafe.  A family owned business, the Radial Cafe, touts itself as “Omaha’s Oldest Cafe.” My friends and I visited for breakfast. We were initially ushered to a small waiting room, but were seated within 5 minutes. The inside of the diner is small and cozy, with an interesting assortment of Omaha photographs and artwork adorning the walls. The diner was packed, but the customers were diverse and friendly, making the experience enjoyable.  I had “The Works” breakfast that included scrambled eggs, hash browns, toast and bacon. The portion sizes were large and tasty. I had a minor spill, but the wait staff was on-the-spot to clean things up. The Radial Cafe is on the “Omaha’s Best” list, and it easy to understand why. It is an Omaha “must try”. Happy Motoring!

Open daily from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., the Garden serves a tasty breakfast with fresh brewed coffee. The potato casseroles and assorted muffins are family favorites. Summer Kitchen Cafe La Vista

September 6th, 2009 No comments

Looking for a great breakfast and the best potato casserole in Omaha? Then visit Summer Kitchen Cafe. It’s located at 120th & Giles Road in West Omaha. Of course, I recommend the “Omaha” potato casserole. Check your tires for uneven tread wear; have them rotated every other oil change or approx. 6,000 miles.
