Cabela’s

Located just off I-80 at the Harrison Street exit is Cabela’s, one of the country’s premier outdoor outfitter’s. From humble beginnings in Sydney, Nebraska, Cabela’s has grown into a nationally recognized chain. A massive store, Cabela’s sells everthing one needs for hunting, fishing, camping, boating or outdoor sports. The outdoor clothing selection at Cabela’s is extensive and reasonably priced. Denim Jeans, polo shirts, and sport caps have been among my favorite purchases. At its LaVista location, Cabela’s maintains an enormous wildlife display of animal species that are native to North America and the Midwest. The animals on display have been preserved through taxidermy, with extensive signage to enhance their educational value. Our family’s enjoy viewing and discussing these exhibits in the midst of the shopping experience. Visit Cabela’s when you are in West Omaha and Happy Motoring!

The Bookworm Store

One of my favorite book stores in Omaha, The Bookworm, is located at 87th and Pacific Streets in Countryside Village Shopping Center. The Bookworm hosts several reader book clubs, and book club participants receive a 20% discount on those books selected for discussion. Often, the store hosts authors at the store to discuss their works and to perform book signings. In 2008, I attended a book signing with Alice Schroeder, author of The Snowball: Warren Buffett and the Business of Life. Authors frequently share interesting details about their personal struggles and successes while developing their story lines. I enjoy those insights. Buy a book at The Bookworm, then walk a couple doors down the shopping center to Starbucks! Ahhh! Books and coffee, there’s no better combination! Open daily (click here for hours) Happy Motoring!

Barnes & Noble Booksellers

Today, my wife and I stopped by the Oakview Mall Barnes & Noble bookstore, located at 3333 Oakview Drive to pick up a Christmas gift for a friend. Barnes & Noble is a great place to do holiday gift shopping because it has a large selection of new and used books, textbooks, magazines, calendars, eBooks, music, DVDs, games and toys. The Barnes & Noble cafe’s serve Starbucks coffee. And, because they have free wi-fi connections, the cafe’s are a relaxing place to just sit, sip, and read or browse the worldwide web. Omaha has a second Barnes & Noble location at the Crossrooads Mall, 7400 Dodge Street. Both Omaha stores frequently host authors for book signing events, as well as children’s storytime reading events. Barnes & Noble also has a convenient online shopping mall, but I much prefer the relaxed in-person shopping experience you find in their stores. Enjoy the Starbucks and Happy Motoring!

Wohlner’s Neighborhood Grocery and Deli

Last week, the Omaha Midtown Crossing developers announced that Wohlner’s Grocery would be opening a second store at 33rd and Dodge in the summer of 2010. I had never been to Wohlner’s, so I visited their Aksarben Village location at the corner of 67th and Center Streets. Their neighborhood grocery and deli rivals urban stores I’ve visited in New York and Chicago. The produce was lovely (photo above), the deli meat case selection extensive, and the wine aisle impressive. Of course, I had to have a Wohlner’s Kobe burger with all of the trimmings, because my friend Andy had suggested it. Believe it or not, Wohlner’s serves a pretty mean hamburger!! The people living midtown Omaha are going to revel for years to come, having a grocery with charm and character next door. Happy Motoring!

Old Market Passageway

Located on the northeast corner of 11th and Howard, is the Old Market Passageway. Like most of the Old Market business district, original buildings from the 1800′s were preserved and renovated into a vibrant, thriving business community. The Passageway is an Omaha icon, and the most well-known spot in the Old Market. It hosts great businesses like V Mertz and Trini’s Mexican Restaurants, as well as White Crane Art Gallery. The Passageway is a tranquil respite from inclement weather outside. Sit, relax and bask in the most artfully engineered space in the Old Market. Happy Motoring!

Oakview Mall

Oakview Mall is west Omaha’s best indoor shopping destination. The mall has spacious walkways, an awesome food court and several well known retail chains, including Younkers, JC Penney, and Dillards. The food court has a wide array of food choices that includes Arby’s, Burger King, Manchu Wok, Orange Julius/Dairy Queen, Runza, Sbarro, and Taste of India. Specialty shops in the mall include Bath & Body Works, Helzberg Diamonds, Victoria’s Secret and a host of others. Oakview Mall is my favorite gift and Christmas shopping destination. Happy Motoring!
